Soak the foot in warm water for 15–20 minutes to soften the nail
Wash and dry the foot thoroughly
Disinfect nail clippers, tweezers, and a file with rubbing alcohol
Trim the toenail straight across
Avoid cutting the nail too short
Do not cut into the corners of the nail
Gently lift the ingrown edge if it is easy and painless
Place a small piece of clean cotton or dental floss under the nail edge if advised by a clinician
File sharp edges smooth
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover with a clean bandage if needed
Wear roomy shoes and avoid pressure on the toe
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, redness, fever, or repeated ingrown nails
