Gather popcorn kernels, oil or butter, a pot or popcorn maker, and a lid
Heat the pot or popcorn maker over medium heat
Add oil to the pot if using stovetop method
Add a few test kernels and wait for them to pop
Add the remaining kernels in a single layer
Cover the pot with a lid
Shake the pot occasionally while the kernels pop
Remove from heat when popping slows to a few seconds between pops
Transfer the popcorn to a bowl
Add salt, butter, or other seasonings if desired
