How To Read A Measuring Tape?

Ensure the tape is fully extended and lying flat on the surface being measured

Align the zero mark at the starting point of the measurement

Hold the tape firmly so it does not sag or shift

Read the measurement at the exact point where the other end meets the object

Use the correct scale: inches on top and centimeters on the bottom (if both are shown)

For inches, note the largest numbers for whole inches and the smaller ticks for fractions

For centimeters, note each centimeter number and the smaller ticks for millimeters

Read to the nearest smallest marked increment you can reliably distinguish

If the object ends between ticks, estimate between them consistently

Keep the tape straight and perpendicular to the object for accurate results

If measuring thickness or depth, measure from edge to edge without bending the tape

Record the value with units (e.g., 5.25 in or 12.3 cm)

If measuring length and width, repeat the process for each dimension separately
