How To Install A Garbage Disposal?

Turn off power to the kitchen circuit at the breaker or unplug the disposal if applicable

Verify power is off using a voltage tester

Shut off the sink water supply valves (hot and cold)

Remove the sink drain stopper and any existing strainer/cover assembly

Disconnect the dishwasher drain hose from the disposer inlet (if present)

Disconnect electrical wiring from the disposer cord or switch connection

Lower the mounting ring assembly and remove the old disposal (if replacing)

Clean the sink flange area and remove old plumber’s putty or gasket material

Install the sink flange gasket (or apply plumber’s putty per kit instructions)

Position the mounting ring under the sink and secure it using the provided hardware

Ensure the mounting ring is level and tightly secured

Attach the disposer to the mounting ring by aligning the tabs and twisting/locking it into place

Install the discharge/exit flange to the disposal outlet

Connect the discharge pipe to the disposer outlet using the provided gasket and fittings

Connect the P-trap to the discharge pipe and ensure all joints are tight

If required, install the rubber splash guard/baffle and any included extension components

Connect electrical wiring:

If hardwired: connect black to black (or hot), white to white (or neutral), green/bare to ground

If using a plug-in model: use the supplied cord and confirm it matches outlet requirements

Secure wiring with the provided strain relief and tighten the cover plate

Confirm the disposer discharge direction and that no hoses/pipes are kinked

Turn on water and run for a few minutes to check for leaks

Restore power at the breaker

Test switch operation and confirm the disposer starts and shuts off properly

If it won’t start, turn off power and check wiring connections and the reset button (if included)

Verify there is no binding and that the unit runs smoothly
