Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush twice daily

Eat soft foods if chewing is painful
Replace your toothbrush if the bristles are worn

Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth if swelling is present
Keep up with regular dental cleanings
See a dentist if swelling lasts more than a few days
See a dentist immediately if there is pus, severe pain, fever, or trouble swallowing
Treat the underlying cause such as gum disease, infection, or a broken tooth
