Choose a ripe pineapple with a healthy, green crown
Twist or cut off the top, removing all fruit flesh
Trim away the lower leaves to expose about 1 inch of stem
Let the crown dry for 2 to 3 days
Place the crown in water or directly in soil
If using water, suspend only the stem in water and keep leaves above the surface
Change the water every few days
If using soil, plant the crown in well-draining potting mix
Keep the soil lightly moist, not soggy
Place in bright, indirect sunlight
Wait for roots to develop
Transplant into a larger pot or garden once rooted
Water sparingly and allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings
Keep in warm temperatures
Fertilize lightly during the growing season
Be patient, as fruiting can take 2 to 3 years or longer
