Keep the scab clean and dry
Wash gently with mild soap and water
Pat the area dry
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly
Cover with a clean bandage if it may rub or get dirty
Change the bandage daily or when wet or dirty
Do not pick, scratch, or peel the scab
Avoid using hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or harsh antiseptics
Protect the area from friction and sun exposure
Eat enough protein, vitamin C, and zinc
Drink enough water
Get enough sleep
Seek medical care if there is redness, swelling, pus, worsening pain, fever, or the scab is not healing
