How To Winterize A Camper?

Empty all cabinets, drawers, and storage areas; remove perishable items

Drain freshwater tank (if equipped)

Open all low-point drains (fresh, hot, and cold lines)

Open faucets (hot and cold) throughout the camper

Flush toilets until all water is removed; drain toilet if it has a separate valve

Drain the water heater fully; remove/disable anode rod if applicable

Bypass the water heater (if equipped with a bypass kit)

Pump RV antifreeze (non-toxic, RV-rated) through the plumbing system using the city-water inlet method or water pump method

Run antifreeze through each faucet (hot then cold) until antifreeze appears, including shower and any exterior shower

Pour antifreeze into each drain trap (or run antifreeze through the lines until it reaches the traps)

Add antifreeze to the toilet holding tank system as required by the toilet type

Ensure all valves are set to drain/bypass positions as required

Drain and disconnect city water hose; make sure no water remains in the inlet

Check for any inline filters; drain or bypass as specified; add antifreeze if required

Winterize the black/gray tanks:

Drain tanks completely

Add appropriate RV holding tank antifreeze if recommended for your system

Leave valves closed or set per manufacturer guidance

Clean and sanitize tanks if needed before storage

Clean the camper interior and remove moisture sources

Turn off power to water heater and water pump at the switch/breaker

Disconnect and store all hoses, regulators, and external water attachments

If you have an ice maker or additional water lines, winterize those separately

Inspect tires; set chocks; consider tire covers if stored long-term

Close and secure all windows and vents; ensure vent covers are in place

Service or replace batteries as needed; disconnect battery or use a maintainer

Shut off and secure propane tanks; close valves and check for leaks

Cover exterior openings as recommended (vents, exhaust, intake)

Seal gaps and check caulk/roof seams; repair any damage before storage

Clean roof, gutters, and seals; remove debris

Check and secure awnings, ladders, and exterior compartments

Empty and winterize the refrigerator:

Clean and dry interior

Leave door slightly ajar (per manufacturer)

Turn off gas/electric modes

Winterize any onboard generator systems if applicable

Winterize air conditioner/heat pump (if applicable):

Clean filters and exterior intake

Cover indoor/outdoor units if recommended by manufacturer

Winterize the furnace/space heater:

Ensure it is off and follow manufacturer storage guidance

For power/controls:

Verify breakers are off as recommended

Confirm no water leaks are present

If storing long-term, consider using moisture absorbers and maintaining ventilation

Perform a final walk-through checklist:

All drains open and/or antifreeze added as required

Valves set correctly (fresh/hot/cold/bypass)

Faucets left in the proper position (per system guidance)

No remaining water in lines or traps

Exterior covers installed and secured
