Remove the grill grate
Open all vents
Place charcoal in a pile or chimney starter
Add lighter cubes or crumpled newspaper if using a chimney starter
Light the fire starter
Let the charcoal burn until covered with gray ash
Spread the charcoal evenly or arrange as needed
Replace the grill grate
Begin cooking when the charcoal is hot and ready
