Sit down and rest quietly for 5–10 minutes
Take slow, deep breaths
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol
Drink a glass of water if you may be dehydrated
Empty your bladder
Loosen tight clothing
Keep your feet flat on the floor and your back supported
Recheck your blood pressure after resting
Take prescribed blood pressure medicine exactly as directed
If you were told to use a rescue or as-needed blood pressure medicine, take it only as prescribed
Walk gently if you are stressed and feel well enough
Avoid salty foods and heavy meals right away
Seek urgent medical help if your blood pressure is very high or you have chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, weakness, confusion, or vision changes
