Remove the avocado pit from the fruit and rinse off all flesh
Insert 3 to 4 toothpicks around the middle of the pit
Suspend the pit over a glass of water with the pointed end up and the flat end in the water
Keep the bottom of the pit submerged about 1 inch
Place the glass in a warm spot with indirect sunlight
Change the water every few days
Wait for roots and a stem to grow
When the stem is 6 to 8 inches tall, trim it back to about 3 inches
Refill the glass as needed and let the roots grow stronger
Fill a pot with well-draining soil
Plant the pit in the soil with the top half exposed
Water the soil lightly
Keep the pot in bright indirect light
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry
Transplant outdoors only after the plant is established and temperatures are warm
