Rinse your mouth with warm water
Save any broken tooth pieces if possible
Apply gentle pressure with gauze if there is bleeding
Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling
Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the label
Avoid chewing on the chipped tooth
Eat soft foods and avoid very hot or very cold foods
Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free chewing gum
See a dentist as soon as possible
Get emergency dental care if the chip is large, painful, or exposes the nerve
Get prompt care if you have swelling, severe pain, bleeding that will not stop, or trouble breathing or swallowing
