Drink plenty of water and warm fluids
Use steam inhalation or a humidifier
Take deep breaths and cough forcefully to clear mucus
Try huff coughing to move mucus up
Sit upright and avoid lying flat for long periods
Use saline nasal spray if postnasal drip is contributing
Gargle warm salt water
Stay active with light walking if able
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
Avoid dust, strong odors, and other irritants
Use an expectorant such as guaifenesin if appropriate
Use prescribed inhalers or medications as directed
Perform chest physiotherapy or postural drainage if recommended
Seek medical care if mucus is bloody, symptoms are severe, or breathing is difficult
