Check local laws, permits, and utility lines before cutting
Wear protective gear: helmet, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, boots, and chainsaw chaps
Assess the tree for lean, dead limbs, rot, and escape routes
Clear the area of people, pets, and obstacles
Plan two escape paths at about 45 degrees away from the fall line
Decide whether the tree is small enough to cut by hand or needs a professional
Use a chainsaw only if you are trained and the tree is safe to fell
Make a directional notch on the side facing the intended fall direction
Make the back cut on the opposite side, leaving a hinge
Move away quickly along the escape path as the tree starts to fall
Wait until the tree is fully down and stable before approaching
Cut the trunk into manageable sections after the tree is on the ground
Remove branches carefully, keeping the trunk between you and the saw
If the tree is near buildings, power lines, or is large or unstable, hire a certified arborist
