Sit quietly and rest for 5–10 minutes
Take slow, deep breaths
Loosen tight clothing
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and exercise
Drink a glass of water if you may be dehydrated
Recheck your blood pressure after resting
Take prescribed blood pressure medicine exactly as directed
If you missed a prescribed dose, take it only if your doctor has told you to do so
Use a calm, cool environment
If blood pressure is 180/120 or higher, seek urgent medical care
Get emergency help right away if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, confusion, weakness, vision changes, or trouble speaking
