Call emergency services immediately
Check responsiveness by speaking loudly and gently shaking the person
Open the airway using the head-tilt/chin-lift method
Check breathing for no more than 10 seconds
If not breathing or only gasping, start CPR
Perform chest compressions in the center of the chest
Push hard and fast, allowing full recoil between compressions
Give rescue breaths if trained; otherwise continue hands-only CPR
Use an AED as soon as available
Follow AED prompts and continue CPR after the shock or if no shock is advised
If breathing normally, place the person in the recovery position
Monitor breathing until help arrives
Control major bleeding with direct pressure using a clean cloth or bandage
Elevate the bleeding area if possible and not causing increased pain
Do not remove deeply embedded objects; stabilize them with padding
Treat for shock by keeping the person warm and still
Stay with the person and provide updates to responders
If choking is suspected, ask if they can speak or cough
If they cannot speak or cough effectively, start back blows and abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver)
Continue until the obstruction clears or the person becomes unresponsive
If unresponsive during choking, call emergency services and begin CPR
