Sit up and lean forward slightly
Pinch the soft part of your nose (just below the bony bridge)
Hold steady pressure continuously for 10–15 minutes
Breathe through your mouth
If bleeding continues, pinch again for another 10–15 minutes
Apply a cold pack to the nose and cheeks during pressure
After the bleeding stops, avoid blowing your nose, picking, or heavy lifting for 24 hours
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen if possible (use acetaminophen if needed)
Use a saline spray or nasal gel to keep the inside of your nose moist
Seek urgent care or emergency help if bleeding lasts longer than 20 minutes despite pressure
Seek urgent care or emergency help if bleeding is heavy, you feel faint, or you can’t breathe comfortably
Seek urgent care or emergency help after a head or facial injury
Seek urgent care or emergency help if you’re on blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder
