Clear a 3-block-wide by 3-block-tall space in the wall

Place two side pillars around the opening
Add a top mantel block across the opening
Put a campfire in the center for smoke and flame
Place netherrack inside the fireplace if you want a permanent fire
Light the netherrack with flint and steel
Add andirons, trapdoors, or stairs for decoration
Use slabs or stairs to shape the hearth
Surround the fireplace with non-flammable blocks
Add chimney blocks upward from the fireplace opening
Extend the chimney through the roof
Leave space above the fire for smoke to rise
Add decorative details like signs, buttons, or walls
Avoid using wood blocks near open fire unless protected
Test the fireplace to make sure the fire is contained
