Give at least 4 hours of supervised out-of-cage playtime daily
Ferret-proof the home by blocking gaps, covering wires, and removing hazards
Feed a high-quality ferret diet rich in animal protein and fat

Avoid sugary foods, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and dog or cat foods not made for ferrets
Clean the litter box daily and use ferret-safe litter
Clean the cage, bedding, and toys regularly

Keep vaccinations current, including rabies and distemper where recommended
Watch for signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, hair loss, or poor appetite
Trim nails regularly
Brush teeth or provide dental care as recommended by a vet
Bathe only when necessary to avoid drying the skin
Provide tunnels, hammocks, and safe toys for enrichment
Never leave a ferret unsupervised around small children, other pets, or open water
Handle gently and support the body properly
Keep ferrets indoors and away from extreme heat or cold
Spay or neuter unless a veterinarian advises otherwise
Monitor weight and body condition regularly
Keep toxic plants, chemicals, and small swallowable objects out of reach
