Provide a soft substrate or bare bottom
Avoid gravel and small loose rocks
Give hiding places such as caves or PVC pipes
Keep lighting dim
Avoid bright direct light
Perform regular partial water changes
Test water parameters often
Feed earthworms, axolotl pellets, and frozen foods
Remove uneaten food promptly
Feed juveniles daily
Feed adults every 2 to 3 days
Handle as little as possible
Use wet, clean hands only if handling is necessary
Keep tank mates away unless fully compatible and safe
Watch for signs of stress, illness, or injury
Quarantine new animals before introduction
Maintain stable water conditions
Keep the tank covered to prevent escapes
Consult an exotic veterinarian if health problems appear
