Wash your hands
Gather a clean diaper, wipes, and diaper cream if needed
Lay the baby on a safe, flat surface
Keep one hand on the baby at all times
Unfasten the dirty diaper
Use the front of the dirty diaper to wipe away excess stool
Fold the dirty diaper under the baby
Clean the baby with wipes, wiping front to back
Lift the baby’s legs gently to clean all skin folds
Let the skin dry
Apply diaper cream if needed
Slide a clean diaper under the baby
Pull the front of the diaper up between the baby’s legs
Fasten the tabs snugly but not too tight
Make sure the diaper fits above the belly button for newborns
Check that the leg cuffs are pulled out
Dispose of the dirty diaper
Wash your hands again
Check the diaper often and change it when wet or dirty
