Wash your hands thoroughly
Use a clean, soft, damp gauze pad or washcloth
Gently wrap the gauze or cloth around your finger
Open the baby’s mouth gently
Wipe the tongue lightly with the damp gauze or cloth
Avoid scrubbing or pressing hard
Clean only the visible surface of the tongue
Stop if the baby becomes upset or uncomfortable
Do not use toothpaste, mouthwash, or harsh cleaners
Repeat only if recommended by a pediatrician
Contact a pediatrician if you see white patches that do not wipe off, redness, bleeding, or signs of pain
