How to Change a Newborn Diaper?

Gather a clean diaper, wipes or warm wet cloth, diaper cream if needed, and a changing pad

Wash your hands

Place the baby on a safe, flat changing surface and keep one hand on the baby at all times

Unfasten the dirty diaper

Use the front of the dirty diaper to wipe away most of the mess

Lift the baby’s legs gently by the ankles and slide the dirty diaper out

Clean the diaper area thoroughly with wipes or a wet cloth

Wipe from front to back

Clean all skin folds

Let the skin dry

Apply diaper cream if needed

Slide a clean diaper under the baby with the back part at the waist

Bring the front of the diaper up between the baby’s legs

Fasten the tabs snugly but not too tight

Make sure the diaper fits around the legs and waist without gaps

Fold down the top edge if it covers the umbilical cord stump

Dispose of the dirty diaper properly

Wash your hands again

Change the diaper whenever it is wet or soiled
