Use a digital rectal thermometer for the most accurate reading in a newborn
Clean the thermometer before and after use
Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the tip
Place the baby on their back with legs gently lifted
Insert the thermometer about 1/2 inch to 1 inch into the rectum
Hold the thermometer steady until it beeps
Read and record the temperature immediately
Normal newborn temperature is about 97.7°F to 99.5°F (36.5°C to 37.5°C)
Check the armpit with a digital thermometer if rectal measurement is not possible
Place the thermometer high in the center of the armpit and hold the arm snugly against the body
Avoid using forehead, ear, or oral thermometers in newborns unless directed by a doctor
Contact a healthcare provider right away if the temperature is below 97.7°F (36.5°C) or 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
