Turn off the device or vehicle
Set the voltmeter to DC volts
Select a range above the battery’s rated voltage
Connect the red probe to the battery positive terminal
Connect the black probe to the battery negative terminal
Read the voltage on the display
Compare the reading to the battery’s expected voltage
Check for a fully charged, low, or dead battery based on the reading
Remove the probes after testing
