Wash your hands with soap and water, then dry completely
Check that your glucose meter is working and has a valid test strip
Insert a new test strip into the meter
Use a lancet to prick the side of your fingertip (avoid the center of the fingertip)
Touch the test strip to the drop of blood until the meter reads
Record the result (time, reading, and any notes such as food, exercise, or symptoms)
Dispose of the lancet and used strip safely in a sharps/biohazard container if available, or per local guidance
Store test strips and meter supplies according to the label instructions
If you use a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), check readings in the app or receiver and follow the device’s calibration/alert instructions
If readings are unusually high or low, repeat the test with a new strip and re-check handwashing and strip expiration/handling
Seek urgent care or follow your clinician’s emergency plan for severe symptoms or very high/very low readings
