Part your dog’s fur and look closely at the skin, especially around the neck, belly, tail base, and groin
Check for small, fast-moving brown or black insects
Use a flea comb and inspect the comb after each pass
Look for black specks on the skin or in the fur
Place the black specks on a damp white paper towel; if they turn reddish-brown, they may be flea dirt
Check for excessive scratching, biting, licking, or restlessness
Look for red, irritated, or scabbed skin
Check your dog’s bedding and resting areas for fleas or flea dirt
Examine your dog after walks or time outdoors
Use a bright light to inspect harder-to-see areas
Check the tail base and behind the ears carefully
If you find signs of fleas, contact a veterinarian for treatment options
