Check hair in bright light
Part the hair into small sections
Inspect the scalp, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck
Look for live lice moving on the scalp or hair
Look for nits attached firmly to hair shafts near the scalp
Check for tiny white, yellow, or brown oval eggs
Distinguish nits from dandruff by trying to slide them off the hair
Repeat the check after wetting the hair for easier detection
Examine bedding, hats, and brushes for signs of lice
Check all household members if lice are found
