How to Cite a Book in Text MLA?

Use the author’s last name and the page number in parentheses.

Format: (AuthorLastName pageNumber)

Example: (Smith 24)

If the author’s name is mentioned in the sentence, include only the page number in parentheses.

Example: Smith says the idea is important (24).

If there are two authors, include both last names: (Smith and Jones 24)

If there are three or more authors, use the first author’s last name followed by et al.: (Smith et al. 24)

If there is no author, use a shortened title in quotation marks: (“Title” 24)

If the source has no page numbers, use only the author’s last name: (Smith)

For a work in multiple volumes, include the volume number and page number if needed: (Smith 2: 45)
