Start with the author’s last name, first name (or organization name).
Use quotation marks around the title of the source if it’s an article, chapter, or web page.
Use italics for the title of a book, journal, magazine, newspaper, or website.
MLA in-text citation format: (Author Last Name page number) or (Author Last Name).
If there’s no page number, use (Author Last Name) or (Organization Name).
If there’s no author, use the title (shortened) in the in-text citation.
MLA Works Cited entry basics: Author. “Title.” *Container*, other contributors, version, number, publisher, publication date, location.
For a book: Author. *Title*. Publisher, Publication Date.
For an article in a journal: Author. “Title of Article.” *Title of Journal*, vol. number, no. number, Year, pp. page range.
For a web page: Author (if available). “Title of Page.” *Website Name*, Publisher/Organization, Publication Date, URL.
For a source with no date: replace the date with n.d.
For two authors: list both in the author position: Last Name, First Name, and First Name Last Name.
For three or more authors: list the first author followed by et al. in the author position.
For a source with a DOI: add “https://doi.org/DOI” at the end.
For a source accessed online only: include the URL; add “Accessed Day Month Year” only if required by your instructor.
