Use a soft washcloth to clean only the outer ear
If wax feels uncomfortable, soften it with a few drops of mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, or over-the-counter earwax drops
Tilt the head to the side, apply drops as directed on the label, and let them sit briefly
After softening, gently rinse the outer ear with warm water if the product instructions recommend rinsing
Dry the outer ear with a towel after cleaning
Use only ear drops or cleaning methods labeled for earwax removal if you have earwax buildup
Stop and seek medical care if you have pain, discharge, bleeding, fever, worsening hearing, dizziness/vertigo, or severe itching
Avoid inserting cotton swabs, fingers, or tools into the ear canal
Avoid ear candling
Avoid using hydrogen peroxide or alcohol unless specifically directed by a clinician
Avoid irrigation if you have a known or suspected eardrum perforation, ear tubes, recent ear surgery, recurrent ear infections, or significant ear pain
If you wear hearing aids or earbuds, clean them regularly and keep the ear dry
If symptoms persist after a few days of wax-softening drops, get an ear exam
