How to Clean Rusty Battery Terminals?

Wear gloves and eye protection

Turn off the vehicle and remove the key

Disconnect the negative terminal first

Disconnect the positive terminal second

Inspect the terminals for heavy corrosion or damage

Mix baking soda with water

Apply the solution to the rusty terminals

Scrub the terminals with a wire brush or battery terminal brush

Wipe away loosened corrosion with a clean cloth

Clean the cable ends the same way

Rinse lightly with a damp cloth if needed

Dry all parts completely

Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly or terminal protectant

Reconnect the positive terminal first

Reconnect the negative terminal second

Tighten the connections securely
