Wash your hands before touching the cord stump
Keep the cord stump clean and dry
Fold the diaper below the stump to expose it to air
Clean only if it gets dirty with urine or stool
Use plain water and a clean cloth or cotton swab if needed
Gently pat the area dry after cleaning
Do not pull, rub, or twist the stump
Do not use alcohol, powders, oils, or ointments unless advised by a doctor
Give sponge baths until the stump falls off and the area heals
Watch for redness, swelling, foul smell, pus, or bleeding
Contact a doctor if there are signs of infection or the stump has not fallen off as expected
