How to Cook a Blooming Onion?

Choose a large sweet onion

Cut off the top and peel the skin

Leave the root end intact

Place the onion root-side down

Make 12 to 16 vertical cuts from the top toward the root, stopping before the root

Separate the petals gently

Soak the onion in cold water for 10 to 15 minutes

Drain and pat dry

Mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne

Beat eggs with milk or buttermilk

Dip the onion in the flour mixture

Dip it into the egg mixture

Coat it again with the flour mixture

Shake off excess coating

Heat oil to 350°F

Place the onion in the hot oil root-side down

Fry until golden brown and crisp

Remove and drain on paper towels

Serve with dipping sauce
