Gather ground beef, salt, pepper, oil or butter, and a skillet
Form the beef into a patty slightly wider than the bun
Make a small dimple in the center of the patty
Heat the skillet over medium-high heat
Add a small amount of oil or butter to the pan
Place the patty in the hot skillet
Season the top with salt and pepper
Cook for 3 to 5 minutes on the first side
Flip the burger once
Cook for another 3 to 5 minutes
Add cheese during the last minute if desired
Check for doneness
Remove the burger from the skillet
Let it rest for a few minutes
Place on a bun and add toppings
