How to Cook Masoor Dal?

Rinse 1 cup masoor dal thoroughly until the water runs clear

Soak for 15 to 20 minutes if desired

Add the dal to a pot with 3 cups water

Add 1/2 teaspoon turmeric and salt to taste

Bring to a boil

Skim off any foam

Reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes until soft

Stir occasionally and add more water if needed

Heat oil or ghee in a pan

Add cumin seeds, chopped onion, garlic, and ginger

Cook until golden

Add chopped tomato, red chili powder, and coriander powder

Cook until the masala softens

Pour the tempering into the cooked dal

Mix well and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes

Garnish with cilantro

Serve hot with rice or roti
