Remove the membrane from the back of the ribs
Trim excess fat
Season both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and brown sugar
Cut ribs into sections that fit in the crock pot
Place sliced onions or a small amount of liquid at the bottom of the crock pot
Stack the ribs in the crock pot with the meaty side facing out if possible
Add barbecue sauce or a dry rub mixture if desired
Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours
Check that the ribs are tender and pulling away from the bone
Transfer the ribs to a baking sheet if you want them browned
Brush with barbecue sauce
Broil for 3 to 5 minutes until caramelized
Serve hot
