Drain the sauerkraut from the jar
Rinse it if you want a milder flavor
Heat a skillet or saucepan over medium heat
Add a little butter, oil, or bacon fat
Add chopped onion if desired
Add the sauerkraut to the pan
Stir in a splash of water, broth, or apple juice
Season with pepper, caraway seeds, garlic, or sugar if desired
Cover and simmer for 10 to 20 minutes
Stir occasionally
Cook until heated through and tender
Serve hot as a side dish or topping
