Sit or lie down immediately when vertigo starts
Keep your head still and avoid sudden movements
Focus your eyes on a fixed object
Drink water if you may be dehydrated
Rest until the spinning sensation passes
Avoid driving, climbing, or operating machinery during symptoms
Change positions slowly, especially when standing up
Try the Epley maneuver if vertigo is caused by BPPV and you know how to do it safely
Take prescribed vertigo or nausea medication as directed
Avoid alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine if they worsen symptoms
Eat regularly to avoid low blood sugar
Treat any ear infection or sinus problem if present
See a doctor if vertigo is frequent, severe, or recurring
Seek urgent medical care if vertigo comes with weakness, numbness, chest pain, severe headache, trouble speaking, or fainting
