Keep the area clean and dry
Apply a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Use petroleum jelly to protect and moisturize the lips
Avoid picking, popping, or peeling the blister
Avoid spicy, salty, acidic, or very hot foods
Use an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed
Use an over-the-counter antiviral cream if the blister is from cold sores
Wash hands before and after touching the area
Avoid kissing, sharing utensils, or sharing lip products
Replace old lip balms, lipsticks, or toothbrushes
Stay hydrated
Use sunscreen lip balm to prevent irritation from sun exposure
See a doctor if blisters are severe, recurrent, spreading, or not healing
Seek medical care if there is fever, pus, significant swelling, or trouble eating or breathing
