Turn off the water supply to the toilet if possible
Put on gloves
Remove the toilet tank lid and flush to empty the tank
Use a cup or sponge to remove remaining water from the bowl if needed
Place the plunger firmly over the drain opening in the bowl
Add enough water to cover the plunger cup (use a bucket if the bowl is low)
Push down to create a seal, then pull up slightly to build pressure
Perform 10–20 forceful plunges in quick succession
Stop and check if the water level drops and drains
If clogged, repeat plunging 2–3 rounds, ensuring a tight seal each time
If the clog persists, try a different plunger type (flange/cup plunger) and repeat
If still not cleared, use a toilet auger (closet auger) and feed it into the drain
Crank the auger to break up or retrieve the blockage, then flush carefully
After clearing, flush once or twice to confirm proper drainage
Restore water supply and refill if it was turned off
Clean and sanitize the plunger/auger and wash hands
