Remove the drain stopper or stopper cover
Use needle-nose pliers or a drain key if the drain has a crossbar or lift-and-turn mechanism
Turn the drain counterclockwise if it is threaded
Pry gently around the edge with a flathead screwdriver if it is stuck
Apply penetrating oil and wait a few minutes if corrosion is present
Grip the drain flange with a drain removal tool and twist it out
Unscrew the overflow plate and linkage if the drain is connected to a trip lever
Use a plunger or wet/dry vacuum to relieve suction before removing
Clean away old plumber’s putty or sealant after removal
Replace the drain if the threads or flange are damaged
