Use sharp, clean pruning shears or scissors
Cut the stems at a 45-degree angle
Cut 1 to 2 inches from the bottom of the stem
Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline
Cut the roses early in the morning or late in the evening
Place the cut roses immediately in clean water
Recut the stems underwater if possible
Avoid crushing the stems while cutting
Trim away thorns if needed
Keep the roses in a cool place after cutting
