Unplug the refrigerator from the power outlet
Remove all food from the freezer and refrigerator compartments
Take out shelves, drawers, and ice trays if needed
Place towels or absorbent cloths around the base to catch water
Leave the freezer door open
Leave the refrigerator door open if frost is present there too
Allow the ice to melt naturally
Use a fan to speed up defrosting if desired
Place bowls of warm water inside the freezer to help loosen ice
Replace the warm water as it cools
Remove loosened ice gently with a plastic spatula if needed
Do not use sharp tools to chip ice
Do not use a hair dryer or heat gun near the appliance
Wipe away melted water as it collects
Clean and dry the interior completely after all ice is gone
Reinstall shelves, drawers, and ice trays
Plug the refrigerator back in
Wait for it to reach the proper temperature before returning food
Reset any settings if needed
