How To Disconnect Car Battery?

Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the ignition

Set the parking brake

Ensure all accessories are off (lights, radio, HVAC)

Open the hood and locate the battery terminals

Identify the negative terminal (usually marked with “-” or “NEG”)

If present, remove any terminal covers or protective caps

Loosen the negative terminal clamp bolt using the correct wrench/socket

Move the negative cable away from the battery post and secure it so it cannot spring back

Loosen the positive terminal clamp bolt

Move the positive cable away from the battery post and secure it so it cannot spring back

If you are replacing the battery, remove the hold-down clamp/bracket and lift the battery out carefully

When reconnecting later, connect the positive terminal first, then connect the negative terminal last

Tighten both terminal clamps securely and reinstall any terminal covers/protective caps
