Display the flag from sunrise to sunset, unless properly illuminated at night
Raise it briskly and lower it ceremoniously
Do not let it touch the ground, floor, water, or anything beneath it
Keep it clean, undamaged, and in good condition
Display it on a staff or halyard with the union at the peak when on a flagpole
When displayed against a wall or in a window, place the union uppermost and to the flag’s own right
When displayed over the middle of a street, suspend it vertically with the union to the north on east-west streets or to the east on north-south streets
When displayed with other flags, place the American flag in a position of honor
When displayed with crossed staffs, place the American flag on its own right and in front of the other flag
When displayed in a group of flags from staffs, place it at the center and highest point if possible
When displayed on a vehicle, secure it to the chassis or right fender
Never use the flag as clothing, drapery, bedding, or decoration
Never place anything on the flag
Never carry it flat or horizontally, except when in a parade or ceremony
Fold it properly when not in use
Retire it respectfully when it is worn or no longer fit for display
