How to Display the American Flag?

Display the flag from sunrise to sunset, unless properly illuminated at night

Raise it briskly and lower it ceremoniously

Do not let it touch the ground, floor, water, or anything beneath it

Keep it clean, undamaged, and in good condition

Display it on a staff or halyard with the union at the peak when on a flagpole

When displayed against a wall or in a window, place the union uppermost and to the flag’s own right

When displayed over the middle of a street, suspend it vertically with the union to the north on east-west streets or to the east on north-south streets

When displayed with other flags, place the American flag in a position of honor

When displayed with crossed staffs, place the American flag on its own right and in front of the other flag

When displayed in a group of flags from staffs, place it at the center and highest point if possible

When displayed on a vehicle, secure it to the chassis or right fender

Never use the flag as clothing, drapery, bedding, or decoration

Never place anything on the flag

Never carry it flat or horizontally, except when in a parade or ceremony

Fold it properly when not in use

Retire it respectfully when it is worn or no longer fit for display
