Fold the flag properly into the traditional triangle
Contact a local American Legion, VFW, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, or other civic organization that conducts flag retirement ceremonies
If no ceremony is available, prepare a safe outdoor fire in a suitable container or fire pit
Place the flag into the fire respectfully and completely
Ensure the flag is fully consumed
Extinguish the fire safely and completely
Dispose of the ashes respectfully, if desired
Never throw the flag in the trash if a retirement ceremony or respectful burning is possible
