How To Do An Oil Change?

Gather supplies: correct oil type/weight, new oil filter, new drain plug washer/O-ring (if required), funnel, oil filter wrench (if needed), jack stands or ramps (if lifting), wheel chocks, gloves, shop towels, drain pan, and the owner’s manual

Warm the engine 2–5 minutes

Park on level ground, set parking brake, and chock wheels

Locate the oil fill cap and loosen it

Locate the oil drain plug and place the drain pan underneath

Remove the drain plug and allow oil to drain fully

Reinstall the drain plug with the correct torque (use a new washer/O-ring if required)

Remove the old oil filter (use an oil filter wrench if needed)

Check that the old filter gasket is not stuck to the engine

Lightly coat the new filter gasket with fresh oil

Install the new oil filter by hand until gasket contact, then tighten per filter instructions (typically about 3/4 turn after gasket contact)

Add the correct amount of new oil (start with slightly under the full amount)

Reinstall the oil fill cap

Start the engine and let it run 30–60 seconds

Check for leaks at the drain plug and around the oil filter

Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes for oil to settle

Check the dipstick, add oil as needed to reach the correct level

Dispose of used oil and filter properly (recycling center or auto parts store)

Record the oil change date and mileage on the maintenance log
