Ask if the person is choking and if they can speak or cough
Call emergency services if the person cannot breathe, speak, or cough
Stand behind the person
Wrap your arms around their waist
Make a fist with one hand
Place the thumb side of your fist just above the navel and below the ribcage
Grasp your fist with your other hand
Pull inward and upward with quick thrusts
Repeat until the object comes out or the person becomes unresponsive
If the person becomes unresponsive, lower them to the ground and start CPR
If the person is pregnant or very obese, place your hands higher on the chest and thrust inward
If you are alone and choking, perform self-abdominal thrusts against a firm object or use your hands on your abdomen
