Wash your hands with soap and warm water
Soak the finger in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes
Sterilize tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol
Gently lift the nail edge if the splinter is visible and easy to reach
Use the needle to expose the end of the splinter if needed
Grasp the splinter with tweezers and pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is under the nail and not reachable, do not dig deeply
Apply antiseptic after removal
Cover the area with a clean bandage
Watch for redness, swelling, pus, worsening pain, or fever
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, near the nail bed, or cannot be removed easily
Get a tetanus shot if needed and not up to date
